# Performance Indicators

> Understand traffic-light health indicators for LOI and IR variance on projects and surveys.

Performance Indicators give directional feedback on whether field metrics match your estimated specs. They appear on **Projects** and **Surveys** list pages.

## What is measured

Currently, indicators compare:

* **Estimated vs. actual LOI** (length of interview)
* **Estimated vs. actual IR** (incidence rate)

Additional variables may be added in future releases.

## Indicator colors

| Color      | Criteria                                                                     |
| ---------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Green**  | Actual LOI ≤ 110% of estimated AND actual IR ≥ 90% of estimated              |
| **Yellow** | Not red, but actual LOI > 110% of estimated OR actual IR \< 90% of estimated |
| **Red**    | Actual LOI > 120% of estimated OR actual IR \< 80% of estimated              |
| **Gray** | Fewer than 200 entrants — insufficient data for a reliable signal |

## Using the indicator

1. Click the indicator on a project or survey row to open a diagnostic popup
2. Review which metric (LOI or IR) is driving the warning
3. Follow the hyperlink to review and adjust survey metrics

## Fixing yellow or red indicators

When status is yellow or red, click the **wrench icon** on the right to open the adjustment page. From there you can:

* Update **survey specs** (LOI, IR) to reflect actual field performance
* Adjust **Buy Price (BCPI)** on individual sources

<Tip>
  Misaligned specs throttle supplier traffic. Updating specs and CPI together is usually more effective than CPI alone. See [Best Practices](/research-desk/guides/08-best-practices#cpi-adjustments).
</Tip>

## Relationship to project health

Performance Indicators complement the broader health signals described in [Managing Fieldwork](/research-desk/guides/05-managing-fieldwork):

* **Defender terms** — pre-survey quality blocks
* **Over-quotas** — quota cells full but still receiving entrants
* **Abandons** — dropouts, often from broken redirects or long surveys
* **Low IR** — fewer entrants qualifying than expected
