# ACTIVATION

> Deactivate or activate surveys, sessions, and other respondent values in the SEARCH duplicate check.

ACTIVATION turns the SEARCH duplicate check off or on for the traffic you specify. Use it to ignore the duplicate check for a survey, for sessions, or for a combination of values, and to switch it back on. It is hosted on `https://prod.resdefio.com` and authenticates with an `x-api-key` header.

## Core Functionality

* Deactivate a survey, session, or combination of values from the duplicate check (`Type` `1`)
* Activate it again so duplicates are detected (`Type` `2`)
* Combine several values in one call to target specific traffic
* Process up to 500 combined records per request

## Request Parameters

All parameters except `Type` are optional. Send the ones you want to match on.

## How the values combine

When you pass more than one parameter, ACTIVATION combines their values and looks for traffic that matches **all** of them. The maximum number of combined records to process is **500**.

<Warning>
  `Survey_Number` and `Session_Id` are not checked independently when both are sent. A respondent is ignored only when the survey number **and** the session ID both match one of the combinations.

**Sessions only.** To deactivate sessions regardless of the survey, send only `Session_Id`. With the sessions `0001`, `0002`, and `0003`, the flag is `0` for those sessions on any survey.

**Survey numbers and sessions together.** With survey numbers `AA`, `BB`, and `CC` and sessions `0001`, `0002`, and `0003`, the flag is `0` only for the 9 combinations of one survey number and one session ID (for example `AA` with `0001`, or `CC` with `0003`). A session on a different survey, or one of these surveys with a different session, is still checked for duplicates.

To check values independently, make separate calls: one with only `Survey_Number`, and one with only `Session_Id`.

## Timing

SEARCH caches the result of a respondent's first call for **3 hours**. A change made with ACTIVATION applies to transactions whose earlier call is more than 3 hours old. Once a survey is deactivated, SEARCH checks it in real time instead of using the cached result.

After you activate a survey again, SEARCH terms matching repeat traffic as a duplicate (`flag=1`), and caches those results for 3 hours.

`Action` reports what was done, and `Message` reports how many records were processed.
